Getting Started with Data Visualization: Pivot, Reflect, and Create (and Reflect Again!)

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

Attendees will participate in an instruction session developed at the NCState University Libraries on effective data visualization design that aims to introduce students to core data literacy and visualization skills. While many of our students may be able to learn and memorize what buttons to click and what code to run, they often struggle when given assignments that require them to understand basic data collection, preparation, and visualization processes. Participants will learn how to select the best chart type, how to clean and prepare a sample data set, how to use Google Sheets to create effective graphs and charts, and how to best use elements such as color and text.

Participants will:
  • Identify core data literacy concepts involved in data collection, preparation, and visualization.
  • Analyze and visualize a sample data set while reflecting upon effective teaching practices.
  • Practice making design choices to visualize data effectively.
